“I’m the first to admit I was reluctant to try bjj. Mainly due to the fact that my only martial arts experience was earning a yellow belt in tae kwon do when I was about 9. But also I saw bjj as a traditionally male dominated sport and was nervous going into it as a female. I soon realized that I had no need to be intimidated. The St. Paul Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy provides a very accepting atmosphere no matter what your level of experience is. The instructor is patient and willing to work one on one with you but also gives you the freedom to work out how to do techniques at your own pace. There is also something truly satisfying about being able to see the progress you make. I can tell I’ve gotten stronger and even though my job only allows me to train once a week or so I can tell my technique is improving. I’m a total work out fanatic and I love having something totally different in my routine. Though really the biggest bonus has been the self defense application. Just knowing I now have options if things go bad is very empowering.”
